I mark memorable days with music and poetry, and as a teacher and researcher, music and poetry fill my day-to-day.
One year when I was growing up, someone “did” the 12 days of Christmas for our family. They doorbell ditched different gifts each day for 12 days leading up to Dec. 25, and it made Christmas a blast that year. So our family started doing it to other friends in the years that followed. (I realize now that the 12 days of Christmas technically begins on Christmas Day and runs to Epiphany on January 6, but for this blog I’m using it as an advent-like countdown instead.)
In 2012 I found myself wanting to keep up the tradition, but I decided to simply send a new selection of Christmas music, one song each day, to friends and family who were interested. It absolutely made my Christmas that year. Since then I’ve added poetry countdowns and other holidays and seasons. The email list grew, and I found myself back in touch with so many dear friends and family. There’s no set schedule; it’s just whatever and whenever a countdown feels best—autumn, Memorial Day, Easter, etc. After a while it seemed to be a better fit for a blog, so here it is.
That backstory is how Music and Poetry Countdowns got started, but love for these two art forms is why the countdowns keep coming. Hope you enjoy the celebrations with me.
